Beat the Builder – 2017

Beat the builder is an endurance event based around LLanberis in the Snowdon National park. The event is organised by Taylor Wimpey (TW) and involves various subcontractors and TW taking on three grueling outdoor activities, across challenging terrains. The aim of the event is to raise money for charity and to Beat the Builder, by finishing in a faster time than the TW teams. The three challenges also have to be completed in under 12 hours.
This year, four intrepid members of staff from RB North West; Chris Leighton, Matas Jurevicius, Richard Graham and Tom West rose to the challenge.
The event began at 6.45am with a 25km cycle round the Snowdonia National Park. Heavy rain led to dreadful ground conditions and resulted in many competitors being launched over their handlebars during the mountain ascent – in fact only Chris from the RB team managed to stay on!
After they had picked themselves up from the cycle ride, the team was bundled into TW canoes tied together and made their way around a 5km course on Llyn Padarn. Finally, with their reduced stamina and dwindling energy they began the 13km round trip trek up Moel Eilio and across to Foel Goch.
Through grit and sheer determination the RB team completed the event in a time of just under 9 hours. In total they managed to raise £1596, including a £500 contribution donated from RB. Altogether the event raised over £35,000 with the money going to Claire House and Derian House children’s hospices.
