Roger Bullivant Limited (RBL), one of the UK’s leading foundation engineers, is making progress on a significant residential development, Balderton Rise, in Newark for housing specialist Lovell. This phase consists of 102 plots and demonstrates RBL’s commitment to sustainable and efficient construction using its in-house designed and manufactured precast foundation system.
The foundation system features driving over 1,200 Driven Precast Concrete Piles (200mm and 250mm), driven to an average depth of 10 metres, followed by the installation of over 4,200 metres of RBeam, RBL’s precast ground beam system. This solution was selected for its cost-efficiency and low environmental impact.
RBL’s precast foundation system is manufactured using low carbon concrete, incorporating a 50% Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS) replacement. This significantly reduces the embodied carbon in each component, contributing to more sustainable building practices across the sector.
In addition, RBL’s Driven Precast Concrete Piles are produced in segmental lengths which reduces waste on site, thereby minimising cost. This modular approach aligns with modern construction methods, supporting both environmental and logistical efficiency.
The site’s ground conditions, comprising Made Ground, Sand and Gravels, with shallow Mudstone founding strata, make Driven Precast Concrete Piles the most practical and sustainable choice, minimising spoil generation and eliminating the need for on-site concrete pour operations.
The project is being delivered in planned phases, aligning with Lovell’s programme requirements. Piling operations are progressing efficiently, with consistent daily outputs achieved using a single rig. The RBeam system is being installed swiftly, enabling smooth transitions into subsequent construction stages and supporting overall project momentum.
