2. Plant design and careful planning, at the design stage, to reduce potential environmental impacts
3. Compliance to environmental legislation.
OIL STORAGE and CHEMICALS:
Legal Requirement
• Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations 2001
Good Site Practice
• Storage of all potentially polluting substances shall be located away from drains, channels and watercourses
• An internal procedure shall be followed to deal with spillages
• An oil spill kit shall be readily available
• All containers are correctly labelled
NUISANCE (noise dust and odour):
Legal requirement
• Environmental Protection Act 1990 – Part III as amended by Noise and Statutory Nuisance Act 1993
Good Site Practice
• Plant design to minimise dust and noise pollution
• Restrict operations to set working hours to minimise noise pollution
• Plant switched off when not in use
WATER POLLUTION:
Legal Requirement
• Water Resources Act 1991 – discharge to controlled waters
• Water Industry Act 1991 – discharge to public sewers
Good Site Practice
• Static plant and equipment operating near surface waters or drains shall be integrally bunded or placed on a drip tray
• Oil spill equipment be readily available and internal clean up procedures followed
• Silty water shall not be pumped or allowed to drain into surface waters or surface water drains
WASTE MANAGEMENT:

Good Site Practice
• Waste can be designed out at the planning stage i.e. pile type to minimise/prevent soil arising and their associated environmental impacts
• Under the Duty of Care correct handling, storage and disposal of materials is followed
